There are currently about 100 members of Luminos, men and women, of different backgrounds, who all love to sing. There are no auditions and all are welcome, although the choir is currently full and has a waiting list. The choir’s name is taken from a word meaning light, partly because its original home was Lighthouse, Poole's Centre for the Arts, but also because it reflects the way singing can light up people’s lives.
The choir gives regular concerts, proceeds from which are donated to a different charity each time. For information about recent concerts and details of our next dates, go to our News and Events page.
SAMMY HURDEN
Sammy is a singer/songwriter who has led workshops and choirs for many years, and has been Luminos Choir’s musical director for 11 years. She loves working in the community and has taken songwriting and vocal workshops for Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s outreach education into hospitals, prisons, community centres, schools… always amazed at the transformation that music brings.
Her piece “The Calling” was performed by Somerset Massed Choir at the Albert Hall Youth proms. She wrote the music for the award-winning Ben Osborne’s “Jurassic Journey”, touring for Artsreach and Villages in Action, and is currently rehearsing for a performance of this music with musicians from Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Sammy also wrote arrangements and sang on PJ Harvey’s Mercury award winning album Let England Shake.
Sammy says: “My musical life takes me into many different worlds… one day to a studio, the next to a dementia patients’ ward… I hope I can bring joy and care to every situation, whatever it may be."
